More of Mr.Tobin's zaniness

Paul Tobin.

Writer of Spider-Girl (it's good stuff, go pick it up, 3 or 4$ at your local comic shop. Seriously, go buy it. He gives substance to Red Hulk, too.) and other things... I follow him on twitter.
Every now and then he tweets something that'll roll around my brain, like a puppy in a big ol' garbage bag, making a mess in the Creativity Center of my brain.

And then things like this come out.. especially with some help from Lar deSouza.. almost always inspired while watching his friday night ustream(when he's not doing conventions).

Gentlemen, thank you for all that you do.

Doodles of Bull$#|t!

Warning: The following post contains profanity in it's best gratuitous use - in the name of something.

As is our custom, the roommate & I went to the library to check out what was available and sign out whatever struck our fancy.

I've been a fan of Penn & Teller for a while, but it's one of those kinds of `fan of`'s that, if they're on tv, I'll watch them. But if something else is more interesting, I'll watch that.
Lo and behold, there's a dvd I notice title `Penn & Teller's Bullshit!`. Turns out this is the 6th season on dvd..which means there's 5 other seasons I have yet to explore.. YAY! They tackle all sorts of things, calling "bullshit!" on it all, looking to expose truth over common-held crapology. And they do it in a profanity-laden spree that has me laughing out loud.

Don't get me wrong, I don't care for profanity for just-because.. I use it too much myself, so to have extra-exposure to it... yeah, no thanks. But this is just... I really see Penn as a very-toned down version of myself on a rant when he goes off on these things. And I find it frickin hilarious!

Anyhow.. not sure where this image came from.. but I doodled it out while Penn & Teller were dealing with idiots who think dolphins are smarter than people & even have superpowers.
The downside - some daft broad on the show was making dolphin noises that drowned out my song of choice - Alcoholic by Tim Berg, on a LOUD setting. Sounded like someone beating a newborn to death with a set of bagpipes stuffed with asthmatic cats.
I knew I wanted to do something with a barrel-end view of a sniper in victory.. and this fatal femme showed up.

A bit more body

So, I decided to do a lil more work on yesterday's critter.. all digital this time, completely rough with only a bit of shading & coloured canvas to bring it out a tad.

So.. while I normally don't fall asleep until about 1am.. I've got this job-shadow thing happening.. at 4am. And then who knows how long it'll be, but the fella said it's typically a 2am to 12noon kinda gig.
I still have the problem of transit..and my complete lack of it.. and what with the late-late night/super early morning thing.. it's looking less promising than it was.

It might be time to start asking people if they'd like to donate to the Don't-Make-Me-Mug-You fund.

I think my 'theme' for next week is gonna be poking fun at Lar deSouza ...the guy's got a name that can be mixed with so many things..

So I've been slowly breaking in one of the three hardcover 5X8(inch) sketchbooks.

Some pencil, some pen.. all just random doodling.

This thing's been in my head for a couple days, and I've been wondering where I'd put him.
He's now in the sketchbook. I'm thinking of turning him into an entire race for a project I'm working on.
Think something like throwing a dwarf, a pixie, a kobold and half-a-dark-elf into a blender.

More and more I'm noticing just how much I can not get the same detail out of my wonderful lil tablet (wacom bamboo fun) as I can when I'm working on paper. Quite frustrating.

I'm also taking a small break from the P90X stuff.. I think I may have a small tear in my lowest-left abdominal muscle. Pushups strained it, and a different style of pushup did it in altogether. I'll still be doing it, but I'm taking a day to let myself heal. Stupid abdominal muscles.. just like your back, they're connected to practically everything.

My camera battery informed me of it's imminent death while trying to get a non-shaky, non-shadow-covered picture from my sketchbook.. so I'll have to recharge it before I can post any pics of other doodles.

Warning! Link-heavy text below. Each item should take you to the item's page on Geek Cantina's site.
Also, the icecube trays from a Geek Cantina came in yesterday. Skele-fishies (makes 4 BIG ice cubes) and Dead-Fishies (makes 8 good-sized ice cubes). I can't remember if I posted about the other ordered stuff, so.. I also ordered a stapleless-stapler, cute design!, a Warcraft Axe... the thing's almost as big as my cellphone!(LG Gossip) The glow-in-the-dark (sample size) Thinking Putty is a fun lil stress reliever. My roommate loves her Garlic mints and the foldable camping spork(free gift with order, I believe), Gag-gifted some friends with the Tenga Eggs.. what looks like a stress-reliever is really an adult-fun toy, and I'm finding the Absinthe Mints really nice after eating something spicy or heavy on flavour. (they taste a bit like licorice).

Ordering was as easy as it could possibly be, and that includes setting up an account. I received 2?...3?? emails in one day : a notice that the order'd been received, that it was processed, and then picked up by the mail service. The last one had a tracking number with it, so I could follow the whereabouts of the package.
In roughly a week I had the package, except the ice-cube trays, they were on back-order.

I can't wait to have some extra cash so I can send a box full of the bacon items to Lar.

Still.. if you're Canadian, and looking for awesome geek stuff.. Geek Cantina is out in Winnipeg.. so there's no  customs or border-fees, and they even have a 'discount code' on the checkout page to help you save money, how awesome is that!?

Movies from Comics

How many movies do you know that came from comics?

There's a lot more than that.
Sure, we can ramble off the easy ones.. spider-man, batman, superman, iron-man.. but how about some of those others that might not seem like it.. for example, Constantine? 300?
Admittedly, I'm not as up on what the what was from where and who as I should be.
There's a whole slew of them.. and one of Nate Cosby's appears to be The Rocketeer.

So, because he asked (well, actually it's more like announced he'd retweet any art sent his way).. here's a l'il something for you, Mr.Cosby.

Breaking in new toys

I love my local art supply stores.
I mostly shop at Curry's...because even if I've only got 5-bucks on me, I can still get a couple of bit of sculpy/plastecine and still create. What I'm more interested in is a lot more pricey. Roughly 4$/per marker pricey, and the "good" paper is almost as expensive.. but I make do with the "lower grade" stuff because hey, I'm still learning, experimenting, and enjoying what I'm doing.
But I hate shopping online for this stuff, I'll use Curry's as an example.. because whatever I order, my local store doesn't see dime-one out of it..just the head-office and the warehouse they're shipping from. Plus, a bus ticket is say 3$, so, 6$ if I run over the time alloted on the transfer, which is a lot cheaper than the typical 15-25$ companies want for shipping. That, and I like to support my local stores, because then I don't have to order online, pay ridiculous shipping fees, or travel to another city, or province for that matter, for supplies.

So, I noticed in an online-flyer (yeah, I see the irony in that..but flyers don't get delivered to my building) that they had some markers on sale.. almost 50% off! So I went down..and they were sold out. Next shipment due next week. So it's next week. I missed the new-product day..went in yesterday, and thankfully they still had some.
Now, I've said before that Copic makes some nice markers. I love their Sketcher line of markers, but have noticed it seems to be limited only to black and shades of grey.. whereas the Ciao line is something like 144 different colours. My problem is, I can blend and gradient easily, smoothly, nicely with the Sketchers.. but horribly with the Ciaos. Almost like they weren't really designed for it, but it's probably my technique.
I've got a 12-pack of Ciaos, and tried to blend the red & yellow together on a pre-primed canvas to see if I could make a semi-suitable skin-tone. Nope. Not even close, unless we're talking freakish-by-jersey-shore standards. (remember, I don't have tv... but I do have internet, so I still see every now & then when those....people???... are in making headlines)
But Copic came out with a Manga Skin Tone pack..and that's what I picked up. 8 wonderful skin-tone colours, and a 0.3 Copic multiliner in the pack.
Curry's was also having a sale on sketchbooks ...I picked up a 3-pack of 5X8 hardcovers and a 9X12 ring-spined softcover sketchpad. All in all it came out to roughly 38$. SCORE!!(keep in mind the Copic markers were on sale for 27$)

So, while watching "Passengers" with my roommate this evening, I decided to doodle in my book while bored with certain parts of the movie. I don't work in pencil very often..but this is what I got done in ... I don't know how long it took me.. but I still watched most of the movie. Anne Hathaway has really grown into a beautiful woman - on the outside, I don't know jack about her personality off-camera. The movie's got a nice twist in the end that revealed itself right after I said `Hey!! That doesn't make any sense!"
Anyhow.. enjoy!
Not sure why, but I decided to leave the feline's eyes undone.
